Conan, Natala, Thalis.
Conan and a camp-girl he picked up along the way, a Brythunian named Natala, are alone in some southern desert. They spy a city in the distance. The city of Xuthal is almost deserted except for sleeping men and a shadowy demon. Conan curses this city where dead men rise and shadows eat those who sleep. Conan and Natala agree to leave the city, but meet a Stygian named Thalis, who came to the city as a child. She grabs Natala and carries her through the heavy door of a secret passage. Just then, the slithering shadow erupts unto the scene. It devours Thalis. Conan and the creature eventually fight. Badly hurt as he is, Conan and Natala escape the city and make for an oasis one day's journey to the south. This story is a minor Conan story. Its original title under Howard's pen was “Xuthal of the dusk”.
