An old Cimmerian warrior, Garrad by name, is shown to have once been grievously wounded but saved by a Pictish shaman who replaced his heart with that of a god. The man gets a 14 year old Conan to promise him to dig the heart out of his chest if he is ever wounded badly. That's because the magic heart would condemn him to an eternal state of half-life/half-death. Shortly thereafter such a wound accidentally occurs. Conan honours his promise to Garrad and extracts the heart, and a bat-like creature comes to recover it.
