Stefanya, determined to find a way to rouse her master Zoqquanor from his state of death, convinces Conan to leave with the body that very night rather than risk the protection spells of the sorcerer's keep. Pausing only to change her outfit, during which Conan notices an odd star-shaped birthmark on Stefanya's hip, the two quickly make a travois and begin their journey. Conan and Stefanya continue their journey to Phalkar They are interrupted by Torkal Moh and his men, who demand tribute for the pair's journey through his lands. Conan kills one of them and urges Stefanya to flee, but they are soon both captured and Conan is beaten to unconsciousness. He awakens to find himself flat on his back, hands tied to stakes, as the rats of Ravengard emerge from their barrows. |
