The young Aquilonian outcast Amalric rescues Lissa from a band of thieves and returns her to her desert-lost city of Gazal. The people there are friendly but vapid and disinterested. Amalric has the impression of having walked into a waking dream. He discovers that some horror lives in the red tower, a monster that captures people in the night and never gives them back. Thanks to the spell, Amalric does bind Ollam-Onga to his mortal form. It takes many sword strokes and the thing finally falls dead. Amalric and Lissa ride out of the city. They're pursued by seven dark riders who seems supernatural. Just as all seems lost, Conan erupts upon the scene.
