Conan, baron Sabaninus [Sergianus], lady Khashtris, Shubal, queen Ialamis of Khauran, Conan is operating as a mercenary in the Hyborian world. The story occurs in the province of Korveka (in Koth), and then moves to the city of Shadizar and the kingdom of Khauran. In Korveka, Baron Sabaninus, an elderly noble, conspires with a man from Khitai to regain his youthful appearance. A servant girl is sacrificed and fed to a demon in exchange for the Baron’s de-aging. He assumes the identity of his nephew (“Sergianus”) and rides off on a mission. In Shadizar, Conan intervenes when a rich woman, Lady Khashtris, and her lone bodyguard are attacked by a quartet of cutthroats. Grateful, Lady Khashtris hires him as her bodyguard. Conan explains that his soul is somehow separated (or cursed) and that only a royal hand can restore it. Lady Khashtris’s cousin, Queen Ialamis of Khauran, may be able to help. Meanwhile the kingdom of Khauran is under a curse: once every century the royal family gives birth to demon-children. Upon arrival in Khauran, the queen grants Conan a boon for protecting her cousin. Conan reveals his plight and asks for his soul’s freedom. Over the objections of her advisors (including “Sergianus”), the queen breaks a mirror to release Conan’s soul. The soul returns to his body, but shards of the mirror form a glass monster.
