Conan, Imhotep, captain Mongo, M’Tumbu, Bashat (gatekeeper), Briji (citizen of Gazal), general Battuta, Lulala.
In Meroe, Hak-Heru's demons capture their previous master Imhotep, so Conan, needing his help, must follow them to the City of Magicians, Khesatta. Conan grabs Imhotep’s discarded scythe, but must immediately run once again, pursued by Mongo and his men. Along the way, the traveller reaches a city he has heard of before, Gazal and the Oasis of Forgetfulness. He is met by citizens who might be sleepwalking. A few days later, riders from Tombalku enter the city led by general Battuta. Battuta is surprised to recognize an apathetic Cimmerian. There must be something in the local water that saps the will of whoever drinks enough of it. Battuta bullies the barely responsive Cimmerian and has him imprisoned. After three days of savage debauchery and vandalism, the soldiers find an old man with scrolls. They decide to burn the old man alive. When general Battuta decides that the Cimmerian should be roasted alive as well, Conan breaks out. From the bonfire emerges the charred skeleton of the old man. The creature chokes Battuta. The creature is decapitated by Conan, handling Imhotep’s magical scythe.
