Conan tells Hobb of a past adventure when he was caught up in a war between Asgalun and Akkharia. He began to travel for a time with a woman named Rufia. Asgalun's attack intensifies and its army breaks into Akkharia. Among the soldiers are Mazdak and Gerardus, who claims Rufia as booty. Jubali, Mazdak's former lover, appears, but the king rejects her. Asgalun's men take Rufia and Jubali, as well as the unconscious Conan. Conan allies himself with a scorned Jubali. She is wearing a panther amulet around her neck. They travel to Asgalun to free Rufia. Mazdak wants to offer Rufia to the panther goddess. A panther kills Mazdak and Rufia is rescued. Conan and Rufia fight their way through the soldiers, fleeing the city on horseback. Conan realizes that Jubali was a priestess of the panther goddess.
