Conan, Rann Njalsdatter, Shon, Hobb, Shuma-Gorath, Vammatar, Kulan Gath.
Shuma-Gorath appears on Mount Crom. The wizards Vammatar and Kulan Gath manage to use the chants they once learned from the books to paralyze the monster. Hobb appears and tells Conan, Rann and Shon that he has been possessed and that is why Shuma-Gorath has revived. Hobb also gives Conan the books. The monster tells its story, of how long ago men worshipped it, until a Cimmerian shaman received the books from Crom and with them managed to imprison Shuma-Gorath in the mountain. Shuma-Gorath kills Vammatar and Kulan Gath. Conan feels that he must reach the top of the peak with the books and take them there. He throws the books at the monster and with a great flash, Shuma-Gorath and the books disappear. Before disappearing, the monster says that he implanted dreams in Vammatar to make him go to resurrect it.
