Conan, Valeria, Fox, Njall, Ymac, Sloth, Rhonk. Conan quits his life as a hard-pressed mercenary on the bloody Pictish frontier. A fellow in a tavern claims to have a map leading to a lost city where a fabulous treasure can be found. Recruiting Conan was not his idea: it was that of his boss, Valeria of the Red Brotherhood. The next day, Conan is on his way through the Pictish wilderness with a few other mercenaries: Fox the Gunderman, brothers Njall and Ymac and brutish Sloth. Valeria and her accomplice Rhonk are discovered fairly quickly. The entire group continues to follow the map. The map leads to an isolated plateau that can be reached via a narrow rock bridge of natural origin. Valeria and Rhonk try double-crossing their partners and get to the plateau on their own, but are captured by the natives. The Picts seem to be calling something called “Otha”, a tyrannosaurus, and the god of this tribe. The reptile eats Rhonk. Valeria runs away into the forest. Later, the lost city is found. e treasure it contains is impressive, but escaping with it will prove troublesome as Otah shows up again. Conan finally kills the beast. The Cimmerian and the she-pirate decide to continue westward, toward the ocean and Valeria’s ship, where Conan will have the opportunity of being a sailor once more.
