Solomon Kane, a cannibal, the bat-men.
Kane is still in Africa, where a menace of a peculiar kind seems to prey on mankind: a foe that apparently comes swooping down from the skies. Kane discovers that it is a race of winged, man-like creatures. After killing one, he is captured by a second flying creature, which he kills in mid-flight... causing the two of them to fall to the ground.
