Conan, Shubal, Queen Khashtris, governor Acrallidus, princess Taramis, Mishi, Arkhaurus. Conan is still under the curse of his “soul being trapped in a mirror” (from the preceding part) and seeks freedom. Conan confers with his ally Shubal, Lady Khashtris’s bodyguard, about the possibility that Sergianus is an impostor. Conan brings a local serving-girl, Mishi, into service of Lady Khashtris. Days pass quietly until one evening Mishi drugs Conan and abducts princess Taramis. During the chase Conan finds Mishi dying from a stab wound. With her last breath, she accuses Arkhaurus of the plot. Conan and Shubal take the matter to Governor Acrallidus, who reluctantly listens when suspicion arises that Sergianus is a Kothian enemy in disguise. At a state banquet, Conan adopts the guise of a venerable “seer” or “magus,” wielding the mystical Eye of Erlik. He hints at secrets: that Arkhaurus killed Mishi, and that Sergianus is Sabininus. The conspirators attack him. Conan unmasks Sergianus, slays him — whereupon his corpse rapidly ages back to Sabininus’s true form.
